The list of abbreviations is not intended to be all-inclusive; it does, however, contain many of those most commonly used.  Symbols for chemical elements are also included.  Most of these abbreviations have been normalized to one form.  In practice, however, there is considerable variation in the use of periods and in capitalization (as mph, m.p.h., Mph, and MPH), and stylings other than those given in the dictionary are often acceptable.
